Iodine and your thyroid: why it matters, where to get it, and why too much is a problem too.
Your thyroid needs iodine to make its hormones. Most people in the U.S. get enough from food.
Too little iodine can enlarge the thyroid. So can too much.
Iodized salt is the main source. Sea salt, kosher salt and Himalayan salt usually are not iodized.
Pregnant women need about 50 percent more iodine. Vegans may fall short too.
Too much iodine can cause goiter and thyroid inflammation. Kelp and multivitamins contain it, and it can be risky with thyroid medicines.
About 5 in 100 people have an underactive thyroid, and it can go unnoticed for years.
Potassium iodide only blocks radioactive iodine in a radiation emergency. It is not a general protection.
