How cancer is found

When a symptom or screening result suggests cancer, doctors look for the cause. A biopsy, a small sample of the abnormal tissue, is often the only way to tell for sure.3

From a concern to a treatment plan

A simplified sequence based on National Cancer Institute information.

  1. A symptom or screening result

Your doctor looks for the cause, which may or may not be cancer.3

  2. Scans and lab tests

Imaging and tumor markers give clues; a raised marker alone is not a diagnosis.47

  3. Biopsy

Often the only way to tell for sure.3

  4. A plan for that cancer

Treatment depends on the type of cancer and how advanced it is.1

Blood tests for tumor markers give clues, but a raised marker does not mean cancer, so markers are combined with biopsy or imaging.4 PET scans work because cancer cells often take up more glucose than healthy cells.7

How cancer is treated

Most people have a combination of treatments, chosen for the type of cancer and how advanced it is.1

Main types of cancer treatment

TreatmentWhat it does
SurgeryA surgeon removes the cancer.2
ChemotherapyKills or stops the growth of fast-growing cells.2
Radiation therapyHigh-dose radiation kills cancer cells and shrinks tumors.2
ImmunotherapyHelps the immune system fight cancer.2
Hormone therapySlows or stops breast and prostate cancers that use hormones to grow.2

Most people have a combination, chosen for the type of cancer and its stage.1

Complementary or alternative?

Complementary medicine is used along with standard treatment; alternative medicine is used instead of it.10 The difference matters. Acupuncture can ease treatment-related nausea,11 and in studies tai chi improved fatigue when added to care, but not when used in place of it.15

Alongside treatment, or instead of it?

Complementary: used alongside

  • Used together with standard treatment.10
  • Acupuncture can ease nausea and vomiting.11
  • Yoga and mindfulness may help symptoms.12
  • Tai chi helped fatigue when added to care.15

Alternative: used instead

  • Used in place of standard treatment.10
  • Tai chi did not help fatigue when used instead of care.15
  • No approach has been shown to cure cancer.13
  • Delay reduces the chance of remission or cure.14
No complementary approach has been shown to prevent or cure cancer,13 and delaying treatment reduces the chance of remission or cure.14

The clinic's approach

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Advancement's documents describe an "Alternative Cancer Treatment": a note listing a Rife machine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, DMSO and low-dose naltrexone,232425 a brochure claiming 90% success without chemotherapy or biopsy,28 and a website stating the aim of treating cancer without surgery or chemotherapy.29

The clinic's approach, and what the evidence shows

Cancer proposals from the clinic's documents, each with the clinic's words first, then independent evidence.

  1. Treating cancer without biopsy, chemotherapy or surgery, with a claimed 90% success rate

Proposed instead of standard careEvidence points the other way
    Where the clinic says this
Urdu trifold brochure;28 clinic website;29 "CANCER TREATMENT" note.26
    The clinic's stated rationale
The note argues that cancer starts years before mainstream tests detect it, and proposes liquid biopsy and tumor markers instead of tissue biopsy.26
    Evidence and limitations
A biopsy is often the only way to know for sure that a growth is cancer.3 A raised tumor marker does not mean cancer; markers are combined with biopsy or imaging,4 and blood marker tests have generally not worked well for screening.5 Newer blood tests are promising, but much remains to be learned about them.6 No complementary approach has been shown to cure cancer,13 and delaying treatment reduces the chance of remission or cure.14 The 90% figure comes with no records.
    What this means for you
If cancer is suspected, a biopsy and an oncologist's plan come first. Treatment depends on the cancer type and stage.1
  2. "Cancer is caused by a virus", treated with a Rife machine said to kill the virus inside the cell

Proposed instead of standard careNot proven
    Where the clinic says this
    "CANCER TREATMENT" note.23
    The clinic's stated rationale
The note presents a single cause, a virus, and a device to destroy it.23
    Evidence and limitations
Part of this is true: some infections cause some cancers. High-risk HPV causes nearly all cervical cancers, and chronic hepatitis B or C can cause liver cancer.8 That is why vaccines against HPV help prevent cancer.9 But these are specific infections and specific cancers, not all cancer. ProperHealth found no NIH or FDA evaluation showing that a Rife machine treats cancer.
    What this means for you
The proven way to act on the virus–cancer link is prevention: HPV vaccination, and testing and treatment for hepatitis B and C.
  3. Chlorine dioxide by IV, mouth or skin; ozone; a DMSO–hematoxylin "tumor shrinking treatment"; a "tumor shrinking machine"

Proposed instead of standard careRegulator safety warning
    Where the clinic says this
"CANCER TREATMENT" note;2324 MMS sheet, brochure set page 2.30
    The clinic's stated rationale
The MMS sheet claims improvements and "even cures" in cancer.30
    Evidence and limitations
The FDA says drinking MMS (chlorine dioxide) is the same as drinking bleach, with hospitalizations and deaths reported.20 Federal regulation describes ozone as a toxic gas with no known medical use.19 ProperHealth found no NIH or FDA evaluation of the DMSO–hematoxylin treatment or the "tumor shrinking machine".
    What this means for you
These should not be used to treat cancer. Some fraudulent treatments harm directly; others harm by delaying care.17
  4. Cesium chloride "high pH therapy"

In the clinic's research folderRegulator safety warning
    Where the clinic says this
Document title in the clinic's research folder.31
    The clinic's stated rationale
The document presents it as a therapy for cancer.31
    Evidence and limitations
Cesium chloride has never been proven safe and effective for cancer, and the FDA has warned consumers to avoid it because of significant safety concerns.18
    What this means for you
    Do not take cesium chloride.
  5. Low-dose naltrexone

Listed in the clinic's treatment notesNot assessed here
    Where the clinic says this
    "CANCER TREATMENT" note.25
    The clinic's stated rationale
The note lists it without explanation.25
    Evidence and limitations
Naltrexone is a prescription medicine whose listed use is to help people who have stopped alcohol or opioids reduce cravings.22 ProperHealth has not yet saved an NIH or FDA evaluation of low doses for cancer, so it makes no claim either way.
    What this means for you
Any medicine added during cancer care should go through the oncologist and pharmacist, who can check it against the treatment plan.21
  6. Cancer cells take up more glucose, so radioactive glucose highlights them

Listed in the clinic's treatment notesSupported by evidence
    Where the clinic says this
    "CANCER TREATMENT" note.27
    The clinic's stated rationale
The note uses this to explain how cancer can be seen on scans.27
    Evidence and limitations
This is correct. Cancer cells often take up more glucose than healthy cells, which is how PET scans find cancer in the body.7
    What this means for you
PET scans are a standard diagnostic tool, used with biopsy and other tests.

What to do this week

  1. Get a concern checked properly

If cancer is suspected, ask whether a biopsy is needed to be sure.3

  2. Ask for a written treatment plan

Treatment depends on the cancer type and stage.1

  3. Add complementary care alongside, not instead

Acupuncture, yoga and mindfulness can help symptoms.12

  4. Tell your oncologist about every supplement

Some interact harmfully with cancer drugs.1621

  5. Act on prevention

HPV vaccination and hepatitis testing address the cancers linked to infection.89

When to get help now

Each warning sign cites the official guidance behind it. The wording still needs pharmacist sign-off.

  • A new lump, unexplained bleeding, or weight loss you cannot explain: see a doctor. Do not wait for pain.32
  • Fever or chills during chemotherapy: call your cancer care team right away. Infections during treatment can be life-threatening.33
  • Vomiting you cannot stop, or no urine for many hours, during treatment: get medical care right away.3435
  • Anyone who has swallowed bleach or chlorine dioxide (the FDA calls it “a powerful bleach”): call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 if the person collapses, has a seizure or has trouble breathing. After taking a cesium product, stop it and get immediate medical care.36373839
